me

Feldenkrais

I teach movement and self-awareness through the Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education. I'm a 2016 graduate of Elizabeth Beringer's (third San Diego) Practitioner Training; my other teachers include Donna Wood, Bonnie Humiston, and Kristi Drullard Kohn.

I'm a supporter of the OpenATM Project.

I support critical dialog about the status of Somatic Education and the larger cultural context of somatics movements, especially in the contexts of ecological collapse and economic disparity.

My private practice (active through 2025) is based in Treaty 7 Territory. Please contact me using the information at the bottom of this page.

science

From around 1999-present I've been primarily interested in the biological significance of the structural dynamics of proteins. My interest in protein science was fostered in the labs of Floyd F. Snyder (University of Calgary) and the late Michael E. Nesheim (Queen's University at Kingston). In graduate school my work focused on the applications of NMR spectroscopy, mentored by Brian D. Sykes. I studied troponin, which is a protein switch that regulates striated muscle contraction. I spent my first postdoctoral term studying the theory and computation of protein dynamics with Peter G. Wolynes. My second postdoctoral term was with Andrew B. Ward at The Scripps Research Institute (in La Jolla). There I learned how to apply single-particle transmission electron microscopy, mostly in the context of structural immunology.

If you're interested in my life as an academic scientist, please see my ResearchGate page.

about me

I've lived in Alberta, Ontario, California, and Maryland; I was born and raised in Calgary, bordering the Tsuut'ina Nation. My upbringing was broadly and mildly athletic. I grew up playing hockey but it's been ten years since I've put on skates. I also had an amateur boxing stint (1995-1998) that was full of formative experiences. I made more of an effort at boxing and was more successful, with seven wins and four successful losses. I was coached by the late Art "The Bullett" Pollett and represented the Bowmont Boxing Club. I wasn't really a jock though, more of a nerd. I was into chess and poetry, philosophy and music. I never could stomach more than five minutes of ESPN. I liked Mr. Wizard and David Suzuki. (I was raised on Canadian public television over the glory days of Sesame Street.)
